Is a Moose Statue in our Future?

Having a moose statue at Northeast Guide Service would be so cool.  We have adored bronze moose statues, stone moose statues and wooden moose statues.  The ultimate reason why we never seem to follow through in purchasing a moose statue is because it's expensive, even though we know what character it would bring to our front yard!  I came across these two wooden moose the other day driving through Vermont.  They were built by wooden pieces put together to form the wooden moose statue.  Since "Moose" is the State of Maine animal and we offer daily Maine moose watching tours, I am hopeful that someday, you'll come to visit us, on the southern tip of Moosehead Lake in Greenville, Maine and appreciate our moose statue ~ hopefully sooner rather than later!

Coming To The End Of A Great Season

With the season winding down for us we have been busy preparing for winter, (which seems to be coming early this year). Anyway, we have had six tours in the last week and we have had a high moose count to go with the wonderful fall foliage. We've seen 20 moose, countless grouse, deer, fox, raccoons, beavers, and loons, all adding to the Northeast Guide Service moose safari experience. The next few days are calling for snow showers and temps with a high in the 40's, so we expecting the wildlife to forage even more now that the weather seems to be turning. So, if you are on one of our last tours dress warm and if you have already gone with us this year, thank you. If you are thinking about going next year please check out our moose watching page and we look forward to seeing everyone next spring.

A Variety of Maine Adventures

The last four days have been busy at Northeast Guide Service. With the peak foliage and progressing moose rut we have had extremely successful safaris. We have had all the tours out; van, canoe, group, private, and birdwatching tours. Every tour has had the same response, "What wonderful scenery and the colors are amazing." We have seen a total of 20 moose in four days and the bulls have been all over the place. The wildlife in general has been very cooperative and fun to watch. Turkey, deer, fox, grouse, beavers. ducks, loons bluebirds and of course moose have all be a pleasure to have on these tours. It has been a rainy stretch of weather but that hasn't bothered us or the animals. We have some adventurers out on a waterfall hike this morning and I would expect there to see some great pictures of this water fall in autumns glory when they get back. Once again I would like to thank everyone who's joined us and made this and awesome season.

This weekend starts the prime leaf peeping season as well as great moose watching. The bright and brilliant colors are an incredible backdrop for the sought after moose photos. Yesterdays moose tour saw just one moose but it was a great opportunity to watch one up close for a good amount of time. We are looking forward to the next few weeks and great fall atmosphere here in Greenville. Thanks for reading our blog and enjoying all that Maine has to offer with us  here at Northeast Guide Service.

It's Not Always About The Sights.

Last nights canoe moose safari had eight people from all over, including one guest from Germany. These guests had only seen moose in pictures. Well, that all changed with the drive into the pond. Two very large cow moose graced the group with some photo ops and every one was excited. At the pond, the group heard the mating call of a large bull moose. They waited and looked really hard but he never showed himself. That didn't matter, the excitement and anticipation was well worth it. Everyone had a great time and all of the sights keep getting better everyday. So come join us and experience a wonderful outdoor adventure in the Maine wilderness.

Bright Colors and Surprise Encounters

Yesterday was a great day for moose safaris. We had and a.m. private tour and a p.m. group tour and both tour saw a single moose. The a.m. safari had a foggy start to the morning which added to the mystique of the adventure.  As we were paddling through the foggy pond we came up on a cow moose eating. With the fog being so thick we came across this moose suddenly; which made for some excited guests. As the fog started to lift we could see the beautiful colors reflecting off the pond and it was amazing.  The p.m. canoe safari was partly sunny with a passing sprinkle and offered the same great fall scenery as the a.m tour. One cow moose was seen on the tour and the guests thoroughly enjoyed the peaceful serenity of being on the remote Maine pond. We are just coming into peak foliage season and the views are getting better every day. Come join us on one of our outdoor adventures here at Northeast Guide Service we would love to show you the best that Maine has to offer.

Still In The Water

People keep saying "the moose are not going to the ponds anymore, its too late in the season." Well, we have been seeing moose on the ponds almost every day and even last night there was a large cow and bull in one of the ponds. Last night we had a couple from Alabama that took a private cane safari and had a wonderful time. They saw four moose, some loons and a flock of turkeys; two of the moose were a mom and baby. They watched the baby struggle through the mud for quite a while. When the trip was over the smiles on their faces said it all. Thanks again to all of you who have joined us at Northeast Guide Service this year. The next few weeks should be amazing!

A Rainy Evening

Last night's van tour encountered some rainy conditions. However, the group got to watch a cow moose eat in a bog for about ten minuets. We had five couples from all over; Florida, New York, Ohio, Indiana, and Maine. Everyone had a great time and the scenery was amazing. The colors are starting to become brighter by the day. The nights are getting colder and the animals are traveling more searching for food, the rest of the season should be spectacular.

Trip Of The Year

September 16, 2012 was an interesting day for moose safaris. Once again we had two trips on this day, one van tour and one canoe tour. An abundance of wildlife was encountered on these trips. The highlight of the trips was on the canoe tour. the ponds were very difficult to paddle with a strong northwest wind blowing. After checking the three ponds they headed back to the first pond and noticed some tracks that weren't there before. So they walked back in and were treated to quite the show. A bull, cow, and calf were right there starting to do the mating ritual. The bull was grunting, the cow was bleating, and the calf was just wondering what is going on. The moose came so close, the guests got amazing photos of these beautiful animals. This was the first signs of the rut we have seen this year so for the rest of the fall we should see more and more moose start courting each other. The wildlife count was, eight moose, a flock of turkeys, two loons, rabbits, one eagle, and one owl.

Mixed Bag Of Weather

We had typical fall conditions yesterday on our AM and PM moose safaris. There were showers on the AM van tour and clear, cool, and windy conditions on the PM canoe tour. Both tours encountered moose, one tour saw a huge bull and it was the talk of the trip. Seeing wildlife in Maine is a great experience and seeing a bull of this stature is a thrill of a lifetime. The wildlife count on these trips were, six moose and two deer. All of our guests enjoyed their adventures and were very happy with the wildlife and the changing leaves of autumn. The views are incredible and to some people that have never experienced fall in New England this is a trip that will be remembered for a long time.

Once in a wild...

The Dave Matthews Band song says, "Once in a wild afternoon," but we were on a morning tour, so "Once in a wild morning" will have to do.  I had the pleasure of guiding a lovely Pennsylvania couple on a Maine moose watching morning tour on Wednesday morning.  It was one of those moments where you have to say to yourself, "man, I'm lucky to have this job and hang out with such great people."  Seriously, it's cool to connect with people...find out the things that you have in common.  We all enjoy traveling, food, great music, beautiful scenery and of course our dogs.  Joan and Bob are avid concert goer's, but are die hard fans of Dave Matthews, as am I.  Today, we were paired up, so that I could guide them into the wilds of Maine's north woods on the hunt for moose.  We arrived at our moose pond and had the fortunate luck of seeing two moose, a cow and her calf, grazing in the pond on the vegetation the pond grows there, due to its shallow nature.  There was pond smoke, due to the temperature that morning, in relationship to the water temperature, so it was just pristine and beautiful.  Not only did we see moose this morning, we saw deer, loons and many other waterfowl.  After the tour, Joan and Bob were on their way to Bar Harbor to feast on some lobster and other Maine delicacies.  I hope to have the opportunity to see them both again soon.

A Wonderful Evening Moose Safari

Last night's trip enjoyed incredible weather for moose watching. The sun was shining and the temperature was in the 70's. We had three guests who were very excited about their moose watching adventure. There was one cow moose present on this night and the majestic Bald Eagle soared above the pond looking for a tasty trout meal. Our guests were just taking in all that Maine had to offer on this night and we couldn't have been happier to have them enjoy this experience with us.

A Wonderfull Time of Year

Last night's trips had great people and great Maine wildlife. We had four people, two on the group van tour and two on a private canoe tour. Both groups saw moose and both groups had a wonderful time. The cold front that came through the area this weekend really changed the weather pattern but didn't seem to effect the animals. The wildlife count for last night was; five moose, multiple turkeys, loons, rabbits, and one raccoon. Our van group got to see momma and baby moose while the canoe tour enjoyed three ponds all to themselves. With the weather change the fall foliage should start turning faster and these trips will be more and more breathtaking everyday. We still have opening for fall trips, so if you are interested in going on a moose safari with us contact Northeast Guide Service and book your trip today.

Signs of Autumn

Last night's private canoe tour enjoyed a beautiful clearing evening. The sun was very welcomed after a morning of heavy rain, the local wildlife was out enjoying it as well. Our guests got to experience  rabbits, turkeys, one cow moose, and howling coyotes on this moose safari. This mornings adventure was with a family of four from Ohio. The weather was great and so were the animals. This tour produced one whitetail deer, one rabbit, one coyote, two loons, and five moose. The moose count was three cows and two yearlings and our family from Ohio was impressed. The moose are becoming more and more active and the leaves are starting to slowly show signs of autumn. This time of year is a great time to go on a moose safari with Northeast Guide Service.

Foggy Mornings And Moose

With the onset of fall the cool nights mixed with the warm water temps brings early morning fog. The moose seem to enjoy this extra cover first thing in the morning. During yesterdays trip or couple from Indiana experienced heavy fog early but then the sun shined and the they spotted one cow moose, two loons, and two rabbits. This couple was enjoying everything Maine had to offer and were loving every minuet of it. This morning we had two different moose safaris with similar weather to yesterday. The first tour was an enjoyable couple from Munich Germany.  This couple was elated to encounter three cow moose this morning. One of which seemed to show off and pose for pictures for 20 minuets. Lastly we have our private moose safari. This couple saw four cow moose and one whitetail deer. This couple really enjoyed being "up close to some great moose." We really enjoy bringing people on these moose safaris because the smiles on their faces when they tell these moose stories is priceless. Thanks again for joining Northeast Guide Service on these wonderful outdoor Maine adventures.

September Moose And Sunsets

This week we have had extremely good weather, wildlife and sunsets. First up we had a group of eight; two from Texas, two from New York, and four from New Jersey.  Three cow moose, two rabbits, and one loon made their way out into the open for everyone to see. One thing never changes people love to see moose. Next we have a trip with two couples, one from Colorado and one from Massachusetts. One moose, two loons, and two rabbits were seen this evening; but, the wildlife was only part of this trip because the beautiful sunset was the talk of the night. That sunset was "amazing." Finally, we have our private moose tour. This couple was treated to a hawk hunting, turkeys, grouse rabbits, and two cow moose. One of the moose presented some excellent photo opportunities as it waded in a slow moving stream. The couple thought this was "really cool."

Wildlife Is On The Move

We have come to the point in the season where Maine's wildlife becomes more and more active preparing for the upcoming winter. On august 27 we enjoyed the company of three couples, two from Maine and one from Pennsylvania. This was a bluebird day with temps in the mid 80's which made for an excellent night on the pond. Two loons were present on the pond and created a great atmosphere for our evening paddle. Two bulls were spotted late which brought excitement from the group, ending the trip on a very successful note. On our private moose tour that evening our guest were able to spot a mother and calf feeding in the woods. Other wildlife on this tour included Whitetails, Great Blue Heron, and the highly elusive wood ducks. This group was very happy to see the mother and calf feeding in their natural environment. Next we had the pleasure of meeting a father and son from Italy. This was a great experience for us as well as this father and son duo. We love taking people on these trips to see their first moose, that's what it's all about. Although it was a windy day we saw three moose including a mother and calf feeding on the pond. Pictures and memories that will last these guest a lifetime make doing moose safaris all worth while. On august 29th the weather was beautiful and the moose were enjoying it. We explored with two couple from St. Petersburg Florida they were treated to three moose, a fox, and Whitetail. Two of the moose were a mom and baby feeding on the pond, the other was a unique photo opportunity of a bull standing in a brook. Lastly, August 30th we had a diverse bunch from all over including a couple from Maine that had twenty years experience with Maine Department Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. On this trip one nervous bull was spotted by the group and was not feeling very photogenic this evening. The group was still excited to see him even though it was briefly.
